WHAT IS HISTORY?

 The word 'History' comes from the Greek word 'historia'  which means 'inquiry'. History traces various aspects of the course of human civilisation since the earliest times.It may also +be defined as the careful and systematic record of people, places and events. A person who studies record the events of the past is called a Historian.

 

WHY DO WE STUDY HISTORY? 

By studying history, we gain knowledge which is important to understand both the past and the present. History is not only the study of rulers and great men, it also deals with the lives and activities of the ordinary people.

 

The historian arranged past events in the order that happened first, followed by the events in order of their time is called chronology. They divided history into the following two periods:

 

• Prehistory
• History 

PREHISTORY 

Prehistory is the account of gradual evolution of humans. Prehistoric man did not know how to read and write. This is the reason why no written records of that period have been found. To understand prehistory, archaeologists dig deep into the ground and learn about the life in the past.

 

HISTORY

History refers to the period about which written records are available. The earliest writings were in the form of drawing seen in caves.

 IMPORTANT OF HISTORY.

The past leads to the present. In other words, present situation have evolved out of past actions and events. That is why studying the past helps us to understand present problem and situation in a better way and to plan accordingly.  The study of history is significant because:

 

1.) It helps us understand our course of evolution and how our ancestors overcame the problems which they faced in everyday life.

 

2.) With the help of history, we can understand the way civilisation flourished and certain invitation and discoveries were made.  

 

3.) When we understand how how several culture and civilisation interacted with each other, we learn the spirit of tolerance. 

 

SOURCES OF HISTORY 

There are various sources of history on the basis of which a historian reconstructs the past. These sources can be broadly divided into two groups:- 

 

1.) Archaeological Sources 

2.) Literary Sources
